While there is legislation in place to try to better the current state of polar bears, there are everyday actions that can be taken by people that can also greatly impact the fate of polar bears. Things as simple as recycling and carpooling are ways to help out. Recycling will help to decrease the amount of trash that ends up in the oceans. The trash in the oceans kills the marine life by either coming into contact with it, such as strangulation, or ingestion. Carpooling is one way to play a role in decreasing the carbon emissions put into the atmosphere every day. Anything that can be done to decrease water pollution can also aid polar bear populations. For example, using eco-friendlier detergents and limiting the amount of times detergents are used weekly or monthly will help to decrease the poisoning of water systems. Under the “Conservation Efforts” tab on this site I will link to multiple resources that will give you ways to help out if you desire to do so and educational sites to teach you how to decrease your carbon footprint and help out the others that inhabit this planet.
When looked at, pollution is oftentimes considered in terms of human consequences. This is not the case, however. Pollution affects more than just humans; it affects all types of organisms in every different type of ecosystem. While it is not often the first thing to come to mind, all species have an effect on each other in one way or another. So even though one may not live near an organism, such as the polar bear, they still play into the greater scheme of things. Their extinction will eventually affect humans just as much as it affected them. While polar bears are extremely tough creatures who are often ready to take on any challenge that presents itself to them, they are not immune to the deadly effects of pollution. Polar bears will not survive if a change is not made.
